With the restoring of Villa Gregoriana, the FAI has celebrated the 30th anniversary of its foundation. In 2002, after having obtained the patrimony of the Villa from the State Domain of Rome, the FAI has united men, entities and associations in order to provide the necessary work for the reopening of the Park. The cost of the restoration in this first stage has amounted to € 4,5 million. Priority has been given to all the works that would guarantee the maximum security of the paths inside the Park.
The instable rock cliffs have been made safe; many ramps have been redone using the waste pieces of travertine from the local quarries; two kilometres of parapets, aid walls, fences and handrails and also the river bed and the banks of the Aniene have been restored.

The two main public entrances and the old ticket booth have been repaired in order to improve the welcoming of the public; furthermore, they have also provided services and accessible paths for the handicapped. Thanks to the project donated by the architect Gae Aulenti, the building that in the past used to be an old small abandoned school, has become a FAI Point (there are three environments, one of which has a dropped ceiling, a coffee lounge and a didactic room).

In order to restore the Park, from the naturalistic point of view, 350 tons of branches and leaves have been removed from the river bed, as well as 5 tons of debris (washing machines, refrigerators, strollers etc.) and 1200 tons of stones and dirt, all of which had to be carried out on foot, because the street was 120 mts. above and it was impossible to use mechanical means of transportation. Many fountains have been recuperated as well as the hydraulic system for the drainage and the channelling of the waters, in order to safeguard, as from the original Gregorian project, the naturalistic and geological patrimony from the Aniene floods and from the heavy rains. So, as a result of that, the waters from the river became clean again. In a second stage, works will go on with the archaeological-monumental renovation of the temples of Vesta and of Tiburno as well as of the Manlio Volpisco’s Villa; also, the philological restoration of the green area (3.200 plants were counted) will be taken care of and also the consolidation of the rocky part will continue. Such works will continue to be carried out thanks to a contribution from Arcus.

The works so far put into effect, have been carried out thanks to the contributions of the following: Unicredit, Municipality of Tivoli, Province of Rome, ARPAI, Italian Esso, Lualdiporte, FontanaArte, Fondation Assistence Liechtenstein, Confcommercio, Region of Lazio and several private enterprises. The Pierreci takes care of the ticket service, the welcoming of visitors and the guided tours. The State Property, owner of the Villa, rented it to FAI (at a special price); the latter will take care of the maintenance of what has been so far restored and of what is going to be recuperated in the said second stage of the works.

Netpune's Grotto

To become a FAI member, a required contribution of € 39,00 per year is enough to help saving so many artistic and naturalistic beauties in a state of neglect.
